Biography

Mr. Mike Hansen

Mr. Hansen has taught in several school districts in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He has also been involved in informal environmental education with Mass Audubon and the Ferry Beach Ecology School in Maine. Besides science, he has taught courses in computer use and programming, has worked in vocational education at the secondary level, and with conducted research for the N.H. State Department of Education.

Most recently, he was awarded a masters degree in science education and communication by the University of Glasgow. The research he did was about how much science vocabulary middle school students are need and are able to learn.

He is an active member of many professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, National Association of Biology Teachers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, North American Association for Environmental Education, National Earth Science Teachers Association, Massachusetts Academy of Sciences, Association for Science Education (U.K.), British Science Association, and British Interactive Group. When not in the classroom, he often is attending workshops and seminars to remain current in the content, tools, and techniques of his subject areas.

Besides teaching, Mr. Hansen is involved in efforts to promote responsible exterior lighting and reduce light pollution. He also hikes in the mountains and hills when time allows and enjoys taking photos of flowers, insects, and other objects in nature.
